Generate PDF and Excel documents directly from your Google Sheets data using RenderDoc templates. Perfect for mail merge, invoicing, reports, and more.

Installation

Step 1: Install from Google Workspace Marketplace

  1. Open any Google Sheet
  2. Go to ExtensionsAdd-onsGet add-ons
  3. Search for "RenderDoc"
  4. Click Install

Step 2: Connect Your Account

  1. Click ExtensionsRenderDocShow Sidebar
  2. Click Connect RenderDoc
  3. Log in to your RenderDoc account
  4. Authorize the add-on

Getting Started

Step 1: Prepare Your Data

Set up your spreadsheet with:

  • Headers in row 1 (e.g., "Name", "Email", "Invoice Number")
  • Data starting from row 2

Step 2: Select a Template

In the RenderDoc sidebar:

  1. Choose a template from the dropdown
  2. Templates must be document type (PDF or Excel)

Step 3: Map Variables

Map your spreadsheet columns to template variables:

  • The add-on auto-detects matching column names
  • Manually adjust mappings as needed

Step 4: Configure Output

Set your preferences:

  • Format: PDF or Excel
  • Filename Pattern: Use {{variable}} placeholders
  • Rows to Process: Select range or all data

Step 5: Generate Documents

Click Generate Documents to start processing. You'll see:

  • Progress bar showing completion
  • Status column in your sheet
  • Download links when complete

Soft Pause: On Free and Starter plans, processing pauses after every batch. Click "Continue" to process the next batch.


Quota Management

The add-on shows your current quota in the sidebar:

  • Monthly Quota: Documents remaining this month
  • Credits: Purchased credits (never expire)
  • Reset Date: When monthly quota resets

Documents count against your monthly quota. Preview does not consume quota.


Variable Mapping

Auto-Mapping

The add-on automatically maps variables when:

  • Column name exactly matches variable name
  • Column name contains variable name (or vice versa)

Manual Mapping

For each template variable:

  1. Select the corresponding column from the dropdown
  2. Unmapped variables will use their default values

Filename Patterns

Create dynamic filenames using variables:

Invoice-{{invoiceNumber}}-{{customerName}}

Available placeholders:

  • {{variableName}} - Any mapped variable
  • {{rowNumber}} - The row number in the sheet

Status Tracking

The add-on adds columns to your sheet:

Clear status columns using the add-on menu before re-processing rows.


Troubleshooting

"Not Connected" Error

  1. Go to ExtensionsRenderDocShow Sidebar
  2. Click Disconnect
  3. Click Connect RenderDoc to reconnect

Missing Templates

  • Templates must be PDF or Excel format
  • Ensure templates have published versions
  • Click Refresh in the template dropdown

Quota Exceeded

  • Check your remaining quota in the sidebar
  • Purchase document credits in the RenderDoc dashboard
  • Upgrade your plan for higher limits

API Errors

  • Verify your internet connection
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting
  • Contact support if issues persist

Privacy & Security

  • Data Access: The add-on only accesses the current spreadsheet
  • API Keys: Stored securely per-user, not shared with other users
  • Data Retention: Documents follow your team's retention policy
  • Revoke Access: Disconnect anytime from the sidebar
